Salticidae: Diagnostic Drawings Library

by Jerzy Proszynski 1997

Genus Lepidemathis Simon, 1903

Diagnoses of genera of South East Asia: Light or colourful, sometimes iridescent salticids. Shrubs, plants, especially broad leaved. General remarks: In the field, plants with large green leaves, such as ginger, are often favoured by salticids, particularly colourful species. Some are clothed with dense, coloured, iridescent hairs which makes them particularly attractive and conspicuous. They are often to be seen wandering about or sunning themselves on top of the leaves and sometimes to be found resting or in a cell under a leaf. Salticids often build a retreat between and attached to two closely overlapping leaves. With care and a suitably placed sweep net, one can often collect the owner. Genus: Lepidemathis . This genus consists of only two species, L. haemorrhoidalis and L. sericea described by Simon in 1899 (sub Emathis), both from the Philippines (see also Emathis). The cephalothorax is tall and short with the cephalic part flat. It is orange brown in colour, blackish near the eyes and carries white setae, noticeably on the sides. The abdomen is long and flattish, orange-yellow along the middle and yellow on the sides. Legs are yellow. Regarded as near but larger than Emathis by Simon. Male and female genitalia drawn by Proszynski, 1987 and Zabka, 1988. Distribution: Lepidemathis is known only from the Philippines. Murphy & Murphy 2000: 351.
