Genus Maevia Simon, 1885

Diagnoses of genera of South East Asia: Maevia. Originally Maevia appears to have been a large "blanket" genus for a group of salticids with two main centres, namely the New World in the West and the region from India to the Moluccas in the East. In the course of time many of these species were transferred to a number of different genera. The type species of Maevia comes from America, and an accepted genus with several species now exists in the New World. However, there are still more than 20 species in the eastern region which are not congeneric with Maevia and for which there has been no information since their original descriptions. From the earlier transfers of Maevia species from this region it is not at all clear whether a new genus is involved. Murphy & Murphy 2000: 269-356. Oriental species have apparently nothing in common with their North American namesakes; to be revised and reclassified at the first opportunity J. Proszynski
