Salticidae: Diagnostic Drawings Library
by Jerzy Proszynski 1997
Genus Yaginumaella Proszynski [1976] 1979
Attention: relationship between genera Yaginumaella and Ptocasius require
further consideration
Diagnoses of genera of
South East Asia: Light or colourful, sometimes iridescent salticids.
Shrubs, plants, especially broad leaved. General remarks: In the field,
plants with large green leaves, such as ginger, are often favoured by salticids,
particularly colourful species. Some are clothed with dense, coloured, iridescent
hairs which makes them particularly attractive and conspicuous. They are often
to be seen wandering about or sunning themselves on top of the leaves and sometimes
to be found resting or in a cell under a leaf. Salticids often build a retreat
between and attached to two closely overlapping leaves. With care and a suitably
placed sweep net, one can often collect the owner. Genus: Yaginumaella
is said to be very close to, and may well be synonymous with, Ptocasius.
One species, Y. originalis, and five species of Ptocasius occur
in our area. The cephalothorax is high with the top rounded and sloping from the
rear eyes more steeply on the thorax. The carapace is longer than wide with the
sides curved, briefly flared near the front eyes and has a somewhat truncated
posterior margin. The abdomen is oval, truncated anteriorly and slightly pointed
near the spinnerets. The legs are not particularly long or slender and carry some
spines. For the female Y. originalis, the carapace is light brown with
a tapering, median, light orange to yellow, stripe running from the front eyes
to the posterior margin. On the thorax, next to this stripe, are two parallel
greyish-orange areas. The sides are orange becoming yellow posteriorly. The abdomen
is pale yellow with a pattern of brownish-grey spots forming oblique lines on
the sides. It is covered with greyish-brown hairs and bristles which become denser
near the front. The front legs are dark yellow with greyish-brown hairs. The other
legs are paler. Distribution: Yaginumaella is known from Bhutan,
Nepal, Myanmar, China, Korea and Japan. Murphy
