Guide to genera of informal group BAVIINES

COMMENT. Proposed by Maddison et al., 2020 group Baviini of Salticidae genera, delimited mainly by their characteristic body shape (assumedly a phylogeny character, possibly adaptative), with genitalic characters quoted in not comparable way and not fully used for reconstructing possible relationship, Quoted here as test for further analyses. Gen.Bavia Simon, 1877
Type species Bavia aericeps (at present 14 species)
See more species in vol. 2 at Bavia
Apparently composite genus containing 16 recognizable but unrelated species. Simon (op. cit.: 470) characterized Bavia by narrow abdomen and that opinion influenced decisons of subsequent taxonomist to include into genus a number of species with long, narrow abdomen. The internal structures of epigyne show wide range of diversity, which in classification based on their morphology woud suggest deeper separation, the present stae of knowledge is insufficient to solve these problems.

COMMENT. 36 years ago Żabka, 1988: signalized that placement of the species by Simon was temporary and should by corrected. The obvious job for the subsequent authors was to check the placement of 16 unrelated species constituting the genus Bavia so Maddison made again outstanding discovery in his caree. His team of 7 outstanding authors was capable to.complete that job, but they failed to do that. Four years later Hoang, Phan & Vo, 2024: 257, f. 27-33 have finally followd Zabka and gave produce excellent outstandin modern documentation, but to ocuentation d

Gen. Padillothorax Simon 1901
Type species Padillothorax semiostrinus Simon, 1901k: 71
See more species in vol. 2 at Padillothorax semiostrinus

ATTENTION: Two letters difference in names of genera Padillothorax and Padillothorus signifies separate status of both,
originally described in the same genus (see: Prószynski 2018b: 174, f. 28[not 18-I lapsus!]D-E, 30).
COMMENT: Maddison has "designated" newly collected and unidentified specimen as neotype of Padillothorax semiostrinus Simon, 1900 and type species of the genus Padillothorax Simon, 1901, revised and well documented (in 1987). He could be right in his starting point calling attention to discrepancies between original description of the P. semiostrinus Simon, 1901 and the specimen itself, but he did not completed checking procedures [he did not examined type specimen, did not check vial with related P. taprobanicus Simon- Simon 1902: 24 recollects comparing types of botth species (the only species known at that time) - which created occassion to swape returning them to their vials - situation suspected by Maddison, but he did not checked that.

Abbreviated fragments of the original description of Padillothorax taprobanicus Simon, 1902d: 24, short note on differences with Padillothorax semisortinus (inverted) suggests that Simon compared types of both species placed together at the same time in the field of view of his microscope. Facsimiles of full original descriptions by Simon of both species can be read in the vol. II of of this e-book. Source. Simon, E. (1902d). Description d'arachnides nouveaux de la famille des Salticidae (Attidae) (suite). Annales de la Société Entomologique de Belgique 46: 24-56, 363-406.

Maddison trespassed authorisation by the ICZN, which allows fixing misidentified type species by either a) re-validation of specimen misidentified, or substituting it actually involved one, but does not allow to design as neotype species, unidentiefied and only fantasized as "identical" with lost one? Hurrying, Madison just substituted the "lost" type by unidentified new "Padilothorax semiostrinus", cappointin it neotype specimen of P. semiostrinus and simultaneoulsy neotype species of the genus Padillothorax and deposited as such inthe Zoological Museum in Singapore. Because of wrong procedures his newly described genus and species become homotypes of his authorship. Unfortunately, Maddison has long record of disregarding documents and sloppy synonymisation whenever he fancies. See details of this case below, similar in a number of Prószyński's publications and Internet works.

.
Details of the diagnostic documenation of Padilothorax semiostrinus by Prószyński 1987: 104-105 of male asummed lectotype and of unknown female, found in the vial "151151 Padiloth.[orax] semiostrinus E.S. Pn. [penisula?] malayana] (Cb.m)". Interpreting notes in Simon's description and Maddiso's suspicions these specimens could be swaped syntypes of P. taprobanicus, while "lost" male lectotpe of P. semiostrinus could rest quietly in the vial of the later. According to the historical evidences both types were handled only by Simon, around 1901, the P. semiostrinus was next borrowed by Prószyński in June 1984 , P. tabrobanicus was not examined after Simon by anybody. Comparison of diagnostic characters of Padillothorax semiostrinus "15151" and homonymous species created by Maddison prove that females are not conspecific and congeneric status of males is ubcertain. Females Padillothorax semiostrinus"15151" and Indopadilla vimedaba are congeneric but not conspecific (see "Fine differences" above). NB. drawings of spermathecae show preparations in incomparable position - one ventral another dorsal side up.

COMMENT: Taxonomists, like seasoned archivists and historians, are usually interested in side material to their official routine studies - often permitting very interesting discoveries. While documenting ca. 500 type specimens of genera and species of Salticidae during decades 1960-1990, I could hardly spent much time on side species, so defing type species of the Padillothorax I missed P. taprobanicus. Nowadays, I read with interest descriptions of both these species. A pity that Maddison, with his busy occuopations, could not study P. taprobanicus - he would find presumable some data of interest to himself.
