Comments on past system of Salticidae
and necessity of new alternative

System of Salticidae proposed by Simon in 1901-1903 has served arachnologists well for 70 years, especially for identification of genera known at Simon's time. However, nowadays the number of known genera and species has increased enormously, newly studied faunae of tropical continents yield rich crop of new clades. And so Simon's diagnostic characters resulting in artificial system appeared inadequate for challenges posed by identification and classification of new material. An illustration of resulting mishmash of genera is shown below in an exemplary Simon's group of genera Aelurilleae.

Trying to cope with the situation, the present day authors introduce a number of amendments, shifting genera between subfamilies, merging or splitting them, without revising the system itself. There are also attempts to replace morphological approach to taxonomy by molecular analyses, however, unrelated to aims of taxonomy - identification of species and genera. These attempts are insufficient, so there is a need for radical change of philosophy and methodology of taxonomy of Salticidae. The aims of new approach should be practical identification of genera and species, temporary postponement of eclectic definitions of subfamilies, until workable grouping of genera will be found, and only then phylogenetic interpretation could be applied.

The present series of keys to Salticidae genera test the above proposals. The system of subfamilies developed during history of research on Salticidae is temporarily suspended and replaced by groups of genera based on similarities in palps and internal structures of epigyne, a working approach tested during 55 research practice of the author. To mark differences with traditional names of Simons's and Petrunkevitch's 1928, these provisional test names of groups of genera are written in CAPITAL LETTERS with ending -INES. Groups of genera are anchored on type genera, and these are based, whenever possible, on type specimens of the species. The line up of all known (that is defined by diagnostic pictures of palps and/or internal structures of epigyne) species discloses a real mishmash of many misplaced and misidentified forms. A job for future taxonomists.
