Jerzy Prószyński Comments on past system of Salticidae System
of Salticidae proposed by Simon in 1901-1903 has served arachnologists
well for 70 years, especially for identification of genera known at Simon's
time. However, nowadays the number of known
genera and species has increased enormously, newly studied
faunae of tropical continents yield rich crop of new clades. And so Simon's diagnostic characters resulting in artificial
system appeared inadequate for challenges posed by identification and classification
of new material. An illustration of resulting mishmash of genera is shown below in an exemplary Simon's group of genera Aelurilleae.
