REMARK by Prószyński. Opinion of Edwards (1977: 22) that "Paramaevia Barnes. ... should not have been erected and all species in it should revert back into Maevia,
since Maevia (Paramaevia) michelsoni Barnes is intermediate between the two" is not supported by any diagnostic documentation, of the other hand
palps of Maevia and Paramaevia are so different that these forms cannot be congeneric.

Type species Maevia inclemens.
REMARKS. Lack of knowledge of interior structures of epigyne hampers classification of this genus.

Gen. Marpissa C. L. Koch, 1846 (23 species)

Type species Marpissa muscosa.
DIAGNOSIS. Cymbium broad with short anterior part, prolateral wall flattened and bald with developed posterior upright flap, it is separated from dorsal surface of cymbium by prominent ridge, covered by setae and ended by sharp, needle like process, articulating with a groove between tibial apophysis and dorsal rim of pedipalpal tibia. Bulbus with posterior part developed into high, conical swelling. Embolus very thin, hairlike, following bulbus laterally, and entering shallow groove extending on tip of cymbium. Copulatory openings located inside small, posterior groove, circular or oval. The diversity of copulatory ducts could be arranged into a line of gradual changes, from beautiful and regular double spiral in M. pulla, through very complicated, chaotic long coils, to much shorter and simpler ducts, line of changes presumably continuous with very short ducts in species of Mendoza. Marpissa nivoi stands out of that line. Body flattened, abdomen narrow, in some species abdomen broadened in anterior half, but pointed terminally. Gen. Mendoza Peckham & Peckham, 1894 (12 species)

Type species Mendoza canestrini.
DIAGNOSIS. Palp resembling Marpissa by flattened and bald prolateral wall, retrolateral posterior process visible, but less pronounced, cymbium narrower, bulbus oval but flat. Tibial apophysis different - broad and medium size, in some species narrower but with apical end bent dorsal-wards. Epigyne externally very different, with posterior edge deeply bent, bisected by medial process, with copulatory openings invisible externally, on both sides of basis of that process. Ducts short, pass into either sclerotized loops or, in M. canestrini into compact bodies with internal convoluted spaces. Body low and narrow, abdomen long, narrow and pointed. Abdominal pattern dark, in males with three with pairs of thin oblique lines, in females with medium light streak between lateral dark bands, or lines of dark blocks. That coloration is enhanced by light reflecting scales, in M. pulchra very colorful. Diagnostic drawings below are integral part of definition.
