Note on illustrations. This introduction to classification
of Salticidae includes only species defined by diagnostic illustrations in
the taxonomic literature, arranged by similarities of embolus and spermophor.
Images are displayed as thumbnails to save space and allow for rapid scanning
of theoretically closely-related species. Thumbnails are small versions
of illustrations in other parts of the monograph, whera are displayed
together with particulars of their sources and permissions.
Gen. Viciria Thorell,
1877 (2 species)
Type species Viciria pavesii.
DIAGNOSIS. Body thin and very long, legs very long. Embolus arises laterally near mid-length of oval bulbus. Internal structure of epigyne insufficiently known, ducts make several loops. Diagnostic drawings below are integral part of definition.
HISTORICAL NOTE.
Genus Viciria Thorell 1877, originally having 59 species, appeared to be heterogeneous (Prószyński 1968c 1984b) and consisted of 6 different group of species, which were transferred to genera having similar type species, leaving in the true Viciria only two species, illustrated below. Six species which could not be placed in any genus at that time were left provisionally in "Viciria" and were eventually distributed into their proper genera within next 40 years. Nine unrecognizable species were transferred into temporary "Viciria provisional". A model procedure in my opinion, did not caused much disturbance, except omitting without comment quotation mark at "Viciria" by the Platnick's Catalog (online), which mislead a few subsequent authors, who did not care to read original publication and/or Salticidae database.
